The Perfect Pear - Stephen Parker
Pear shrivel is a longstanding problem that costs the fruit industry billions of dollars in loss of produce. Current fruit bins do not allow sufficient airflow around fruit stored in cool rooms, resulting in uneven cooling and loss of fruit quality. This impacts on profits for producers, and supply chain stability for the supermarket giants that dictate the standard of produce. There have been no advances in fruit bin design in the past twenty years.
The Perfect Pear is a fruit bin that allows for rapid and even cooling of the fruit to significantly reduce pear shrivel. This is achieved through the use of cooling channels with baffles to disturb airflow and increase circulation of air to the lower sections of the bin.
